Monotimbral instruments such as guitars, pianos, or even the voice can only produce one sound at a time. Multitimbral instruments, on the other hand, can produce multiple sounds simultaneously

Timbrality

This describes the number of simultaneous notes that a machine or voice can produce at one time. Monophonic devices can produce one note at a time. A paraphonic synth can play multiple notes at a time, but only has one voice architecture — in other words, every played note shares the same VCA envelope. True polyphonic devices use a separate VCA envelope for each note.

Polyphony

Oscillators produce waves that can be combined and manipulated to create different sounds. Basic synthesizers may only support one, while more advanced devices will support multiple. Sample-based devices don't use oscillators to produce sound.

Filters help you sculpt and shape the sound. Normally synthesizers have at least one filter, and multiple filters allows you to create more advanced sounds.
