One of the two ships of "Franklin's lost expedition", a failed mission led by Sir John Franklin to find the Northwest Passage across North America to Asia. The two ships became icebound and were eventually abandoned after over a year, resulting in the deaths of all 129 crew members.

The HMS Terror wreck was finally found in the Arctic ocean off modern-day Nunavut in 2016, about 50km away from the wreck of the HMS Erebus.
